CHAPTER TWENTY ONE

There was a knock at his door.

“Come in,” Gabe replied, spinning around in his chair.

The door opened and Chloe stepped in. She looked...both hesitant and resolute, which was a curious combination of emotions to display at the same time.

“Everything okay?” he asked.

“Yes. I just need to talk to, um...everyone,” she replied. “If it’s not a bad time?”

“No, it’s perfect. I literally just finished sending off my current project for edits,” he said, getting to his feet and walking over to her.

As they headed into the living room, where Ellen was playing Recovery and Holly was watching, Gabe considered the weekend so far. After that soul-searching talk they’d had Friday night, they’d had a long, pleasant sleep and then a long, lazy, snowy Saturday. He’d woken up earlier than he’d intended today probably because he was feeling the pressure of getting projects done on time more than ever and had gone to finish up By the Hearthfire’s Light II while everyone was sleeping.

And now he had, and now he got to find time to juggle three more projects.

“What’s going on? You’ve got an ‘I have something really important to say’ look on your face,” Ellen asked as she paused the game.

“I do,” Chloe replied, and motioned for Gabe to sit down, which he did. She stood before the three of them in one of his t-shirts and possibly no panties. “So...I woke up with this feeling. Except it wasn’t really a feeling so much as it was knowledge. You know how you just...know something?”

Ellen smiled. “I know exactly that feeling.”

“Yep,” Holly agreed.

“Well...I know. I am definitely falling in love with Gabe. But somewhere in the back of my head I’ve known that since we first had that conversation. Ever since I first saw him, and he looked me right in the eye, there was just...this spark. This intense...event. And I knew. I was frightened and dismissive and told myself I was just really horny, but...after this weekend, no. Not after the things he said to me in the shower, and in his office Friday night.”

“Goodness, what did he say?” Holly murmured.

“A lot of things, but mostly that he would protect me, and he would watch out for me, and he would take care of me. He made me feel…” She hesitated and looked up suddenly, blinking several times. She sniffed. “Goddamnit,” she whispered, and cleared her throat. “He made me feel loved. He made me feel like he actually really cares about me. And to be honest, that was kind of the final barrier that needed to be broken.

“I knew that I was falling in love, but I also know that this isn’t enough. Love is a two-way street. I was worried...that there wouldn’t be enough for me, not with him so clearly loving the two of you. But I now feel confident that I was wrong about that, thankfully. Beyond that, though, I also love this place. This atmosphere. Like...Gabe, you’re amazing. Truly. Alone you would be more than enough.
